TOPEKA (KSNT) – Washburn head coach Craig Schurig received a public reprimand from the MIAA Conference following Saturday’s overtime victory against Fort Hays State.
Schurig reportedly ran after officials at the conclusion of the game to challenge a call from earlier in the contest.
“I think it was a fair punishment and I was wrong to do what I did,” Schurig said. “I should have just celebrated with my team.”
MIAA commissioner Dr. Bob Boerigter released a statement through the league’s website.
“Coach Schurig displayed unsportsmanlike behavior in addressing our officials after the completion of the game on Saturday vs. Fort Hays State University,” Boerigter said. “His actions were considered unacceptable and not consistent with the championship code in the MIAA.”
The Ichabods won 27-24 in overtime against Fort Hays State and no other punishment was handed down from the MIAA Conference.
“Obviously it was high emotion and a lot of frustration built up through the game itself but I was definitely wrong and I shouldn’t have done what I did,” Schurig said. “I don’t want to overshadow what our team did. I was very proud of our team and it was a very good football game.”
Washburn visits Central Missouri this Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Warrensburg.
