PITTSBURG, Kan. – Emporia State jumped out to a 10-0 lead but 17 points for Pittsburg State in the final 2:35 of the half turned the momentum in a 45-17 Gorilla win on Saturday in Pittsburg, Kan. Of the 17 points, 14 came off back to back Hornet turnovers.
The Hornets held the Gorillas to a field goal attempt on their opening drive that bounced off the cross bar. On the ensuing drive Emporia State went 59 yards on seven plays before settling for a 39 yard field goal from Austin Martin with 7:58 left in the first quarter. Pitt State then drove to the Hornet 11 yard line when Lyndell Johnson blocked Connor Frazell’s 28 yard field goal attempt and ran it back 77 yards for a 10-0 Emporia State lead with 2:02 left in the quarter.
The Gorillas were stopped on third and goal from the one yard line and Johnson sacked Abenoja for a loss of four on fourth and goal from the one to preserve the 10-0 lead at the start of the second. After a three and out, Pitt State got on the board with a 53 yard pass from Anthony Abenoja to Gavin Lutman with 10:01 left in the half.
The Hornets held the Gorillas to a 19 yard Frazell field goal with 2:35 left to tie the score at 10-10 after Pitt State had first and goal at the two yard line. On the next offensive play for Emporia State Reasnor was stripped of the ball on a sack by Taye Irvin, setting the Gorillas up at the Hornet 22 yard line. Abenjo found Lutman on the next play to give Pitt State a 17-10 lead with 2:21 left in the half. Emporia State drove down to the Pitt State 23 yard line when Antonio Brown fumbled to give the ball back to the Gorillas. Three plays later Abenoja and Lutman hooked up again, this time for 75 yards on third down to put the Gorillas up 24-10 with 46 seconds left.
Abenoja found Marquise Cushon for an 18 yard touchdown with 5:44 left in the third quarter to go up 31-10. Emporia State answered with a nine play, 75 yard drive and cut the lead to 31-17 on a 33 yard run by Brown with 2:00 left in the third. Abenoja threw his fifth touchdown pass of the day and fourth to Lutman, this time from 25 yards on third and ten to put the Gorillas up 38-17 with :02 left in the third quarter. The final score for Pitt State came on a three yard run by Dre Holman with 6:44 left in the game.
Brown led Emporia State with 134 yards rushing on 20 carries with a touchdown. He is the first player to gain 100 yards on the Gorillas this year as Emporia State posted 163 rushing yards as a team. Ty Reasnor was nine of 19 for 103 yards and an interception with Reese Richards catching three passes for 45 yards. Defensively Deshawn Dinwiddie and Josh Monteagudo each had 11 tackles and a forced fumble while Lyndell Johnson had seven tackles, a sack, fumble recovery and blocked field goal.
Emporia State is back in action next Saturday when the play host to Ft. Hays State. Kick-off on October 18 is set for 2:00 p.m.
