Suspected Gulf Cartel leader arrested in Texas

EDINBURG, Texas (AP) — A man suspected of being a top-ranking Gulf Cartel member has been arrested in South Texas and another is being sought after nearly being caught.

The Monitor of McAllen reports that Drug Enforcement Administration agents arrested Juan Saenz Tamez in Edinburg while serving a warrant Thursday night. A September 2013 indictment unsealed Friday accuses Saenz of conspiracy and money laundering linked to a $100 million cocaine trafficking operation.

A U.S. Border Patrol bulletin issued Friday and obtained by The Monitor reports Juan Francisco Martinez was being sought. The bulletin said Martinez eluded a pursuit by Edinburg police after officers tried to stop him for failing to yield.

Federal agents suspect that Martinez runs Gulf Cartel operations in the Mexican border city of Reynosa, near McAllen.
