Topeka Police and Fire Department participate in charity flag football game

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The rivalry between fire departments and police departments goes back decades and on Sunday, Topeka emergency responders put it to the test in the Battle of the Badges.

The Topeka Police Department took on the Topeka Fire Department in a game of flag football.

The teams faced off at Washburn’s Yager Stadium.

One of the police officers wore fallen corporal Jason Harwood’s” jersey during the game and his sons were the police team captains.

The game honored the Harwood family and raised funds to benefit area Special Olympics.

“It’s fun because of the little competition but it’s also neat because they get to see some of the Special Olympic athletes come out.” said Detective Kristi Powell with the Topeka Police Department.

While both teams gave it their all, the Topeka Police Department walked away with the win 26 to 12.
