HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — A 15-year-old Hutchinson boy is now charged as an adult in a house fire that killed his mother and sister in September 2013.
The Reno County district attorney on Tuesday charged Sam Vonachen with first-degree murder and arson. He’s also charged with the attempted murder of his father, who escaped from the burning house.
A judge ruled earlier Tuesday that prosecutors could try the teen as an adult.
Vonachen is accused of pouring gasoline throughout the family’s home and waiting until his parents and sister were in bed to ignite it. His 47-year-old mother, Karla Jo Vonachen, and his 11-year-old sister, Audrey, died.
The teen remained held on $1 million bond, with a first court appearance scheduled Wednesday. Investigators have not commented on a possible motive.
