FORT RILEY (KSNT) – The 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley in conjunction with Unified School District 475 will host the Fort Riley Middle School ribbon cutting ceremony at 1 p.m. Thursday at 4020 First Division Rd.
Remarks will be provided by Patrick O’Brien; the Director of the Department of Defense Office of Economic Adjustment; Colonel Andrew Cole, Fort Riley’s Garrison Commander; Dr. Corbin Witt, Unified School District 475 superintendent; Mrs. Kimberly Milleson, President of USD 475 Board of Education; and Mr. Joe Handlos, Fort Riley Middle School principal.
The new middle school, which opened for classes in August, is a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certified building. That makes it the second “green” addition to the district.
It houses a high-tech Media Hub/Center that will transform the way students are able to collaborate and learn. It is also the home to a state of the art auditorium and two expansive gymnasiums. The second gym is a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) certified structure, able to withstand wind events of up to 250 mile per hour.
