NEW YORK (AP) — A man who brazenly attacked a group of New York City police officers with a hatchet on a busy street described himself as a Muslim convert and ranted online against America. But police say he had no clear ties to international terrorism.
Police are still examining Zale Thompson’s computer for clues about a motive for the Thursday assault.
One of the officers was seriously injured and Thompson was shot dead by police.
They also are trying to determine if he had any history of mental illness.
Thompson was 32. Police say he had once served in the Navy and had a history of run-ins with the law over domestic violence.
Officer Kenneth Healey is still hospitalized with a head wound.
