TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Topeka Fire Department responded to a reported house fire at 537 SE Golden Ave shortly after 8:18 a.m. on Tuesday. Upon arrival, fire crews reported heavy smoke and fire coming from the structure. The first arriving fire crew were able to make an interior attack on the fire and it was quickly extinguished. A search of the residence found it to be not occupied at the time of the fire.
Early investigation indicates the cause of the fire was arson. The estimated amount lost is $13,900. The origin was determined to be within a bedroom of the house.
A passerby stopped and tried to enter the house to search for trapped victims. They were checked for smoke inhalation at the scene but refused transportation to a hospital for further treatment.
