Area volleyball teams advance to state semifinals

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Washburn Rural swept through pool play on Friday to earn a spot into the Class 6A state volleyball semifinals at Landon Arena. The Lady Blues defeated Blue Valley NW, Maize and Wichita East en route to a perfect record on day one. Washburn Rural meets Olathe East at 10 a.m. in the semifinals.

Top-seed Shawnee Heights advanced to the Class 5A semifinals with a (2-1) pool play record. Seaman finished (1-2) and were eliminated from the state tournament.

Hayden knocked off defending state champion Bishop Miege in the Class 4A Division I bracket. The Lady Wildcats will play in the state semifinals in Salina. Royal Valley and Clay Center earned a spot in the Class 4A Division II semifinals.

Defending champion Silver Lake returns as the team to beat in Class 3A. The Lady Eagles finish (3-0) in pool play and Alyssa Schultejans recorded a new state record with 40 kills in those three victories.

Wabaunsee and Washington County both advance to the Class 2A state semifinals in Emporia with sweeps during pool play.

Centralia enters the Class 1A Division I state semifinals as the Lady Panthers aim for a repeat championship.
