EMPORIA (KSNT) – The suspect of a 2013 murder in Emporia has been arrested in Mexico.
Twenty-five-year old Adrian Peralta was found shot to death in the early morning hours of April 13, 2013. Through investigation the Emporia Police Department determined Gabino Ruiz- Ascencio to be a person of interest and the prime suspect.
Ruiz-Ascencio was believed to have fled to Mexico. This past Tuesday the U.S. Department of Homeland Security received a call from the Mexico Attorney General Office requesting information to assist in confirming a possible U.S. arrest warrant for a Gabino Ruiz-Ascensio detained in Zacapu, Michoacán, Mexico.
Homeland Security Agents contacted the Emporia Police Department for documents and photos to assist in confirmation that the man incarcerated in Mexico was the same individual wanted for homicide in Emporia.
Confirmation was made late in the evening on Tuesday that Ruiz-Ascensio was arrested on minor charges in Mexico and when checks were being run, authorities discovered the warrant in Emporia, Kansas.
Emporia police say the shootings apparently were drug and gang related.
Ruiz-Ascencio does not yet have an attorney.
