(NBC News) New technology is putting the internet on your dashboard, adding social media and entertainment to your daily commute…and possibly another distraction for your eyes.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it supports auto innovations, but “not when it comes at the cost of disrupting a driver’s attention or sacrificing safety.”
While some technology allows for hands-free usage of these new systems, Jon Linkov of Consumer Reports says even those can be distractions when they don’t work.
“You’re already distracted by the fact that you’re engaging with Pandora or you’re engaging with a map,” he says. “Then if it’s not working you’re spending more time paying attention to that and not driving.”
