Topeka Fire Department responds to structure fire

TOPEKA, Kan.(KSNT) – The Topeka Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 522 SW Fillmore Street, Topeka, Kansas 66606, shortly before 9:30 AM on Saturday December 13, 2014.

An employee was working at the local business when an explosion occurred in the ceiling and a fire ensued.  The employees attempted to extinguish the fire but were unsuccessful.  Fire crews responded and upon arrival discovered heavy smoke coming from the structure.  The fire crews were able to make an interior attack on the fire and it was quickly extinguished.  The employees were able to make it out safely.  The business sustained moderate structural damage.  No injuries were reported during this fire.

A Topeka Fire Department Investigation’s Unit responded to determine the origin and cause for the fire.  The following is a brief summary;


  • Preliminary investigation indicates the fire cause to be Undetermined, however no foul play is suspected.
  • The origin was determined to be in the ceiling area of the shop.
  • Estimated dollar loss – $20,000 in structural damage and $10,000 in content loss.
  • This fire had a response of three Engine Companies, one  Truck Company, one Aerial Ladder, two Battalion Chiefs, a Safety Officer and an Investigator.
