TOPEKA (KSNT) – Fire raced through a downtown Topeka business overnight and now the owners of four different businesses are trying to decide what to do next.
The blaze was called in just after 2:00 Friday morning in the 700 block of Kansas Avenue.
“It’s been a long day, it’s been a little trying.” said Scott May of Top City Soda Pop.
An understatement from a man who saw his soda pop business destroyed in the fire.
The first firefighters on the scene immediately called for assistance as the fire centered above HHB BBQ burned on the second floor.
“Our fire crews went up and found some heavy fire going on on the roof from the interior.” said Topeka Fire Marshal Michael Martin.
Shortly after part of the roof of the building collapsed.
For firefighters the challenge was to keep the fire from spreading to the adjacent buildings.
“We’ve had some firefighters who have been working non-stop for several hours.”
Four businesses were impacted by the fire including Clayton Financial Services, Jersey Mike’s Subs, Classic Bean Coffee but the hardest hit was the bbq restaurant.
“The roof has come down to the first floor. It’s a two floor building so it’s not good.” said owner Edward Moege.
Fire investigators have yet to determine the cause and while trying to do so they were forced to tear down part of the back of the buidling.
