TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Topeka Fire Department responded to a reported house fire at 1323 SE 23rd Street in Topeka shortly after 9:00 Wednesday morning.
A resident of the home was awakened by the smell of smoke in the house. The resident and a neighbor attempted to rescue another individual who was trapped in the garage but was overcome by heavy smoke
Topeka Fire Department crews arrived and made entry into the smoke filled garage and performed a rescue of the fire victim and suppressed the fire quickly. Fire crews then performed ventilation to the structure and a secondary search of the home revealed no other occupants.
AMR ambulance service arrived and performed emergency medical care and transported the fire victim to a local hospital with possible life threatening injuries.
The cause of the fire is undetermined though fire officials say no foul play is suspected and the investigation is on-going.
