(NBC News) You may not want to sit down for this next bit of news.
Dr. David Alter of the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute has released a study that found too much time spent sitting will, over time, increase the risk for heart disease, hospitalizations, Type 2 Diabetes, cancer and premature death.
“This is about the avoidance of disease, not tomorrow, but for 10 and 20 years to come,” he explains.
Mixing in regular exercise helped lower those risks, but the bottom line is this: Not only do we need to move more, we need to sit less.
“We burn twice as many calories standing than we do sitting,” Dr. Alter points out.
