EMPORIA (KSNT) – Thanks to a neighbor’s 9-1-1 call, an Emporia woman is safe tonight. This after her house caught fire while she was sleeping.
The fire broke out shortly after 12:30 Tuesday afternoon in the 100 block of South Commercial.
Neighbors saw smoke coming from the second story of the home and called 911.
The homeowner said she had smelled smoke earlier, but saw no fire. Even emergency responders had a tough time trying to find where the fire started.
“We cruised from the basement,” Chief Jack Taylor told KSNT News “first floor, second floor searching for the fire. And what we eventually found was a hidden fire underneath the staircase where there was a closet.”
The cause is still under investigation and the damage estimate isn’t available.
The homeowner was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, but is expected to fully recover.
