Kansas state fire marshal investigates Shawnee County arson

TOPEKA (KSNT)- The Kansas State Fire Marshal’s office is now investigating a series of deliberately set field fires Sunday afternoon in southeastern Shawnee County.

Shawnee Heights Fire Chief Tom Garcia tells KSNT News that as many as six fires were set in the area of SE 89th Street and SE Stanley Road starting about 1:00 p.m.. The fires kept his department, and several others, busy most of the afternoon as they either tried to put them out, or monitor them as they merged into a single, larger fire.

While the blazes did no significant property damage, Garcia says the activity of what he calls a “serial arsonist” has officials concerned.

The State Fire Marshal’s office is trying to help identify the person responsible for the fires.

Anyone with information is urged to call Shawnee County Crime Stoppers at (785) 234-0007.
