(MANHATTAN (KSNT) – Riley County is the second healthiest county in Kansas, but the local health department wants to know how they can improve overall community health.
Officials say several small steps are already being taken to promote a healthier lifestyle.
For example 25 percent of what’s sold in city-owned vending machines is now healthier.
But the county is now launching a series of community meetings to hear from local community leaders and the public on what they would like to see.
“To prioritize what they think the health department, as well as hospitals should focus on over the next three to five years and what times they want to see the needle moved on.” says Katy Oestman, Community Health Educator.
Like at City Park where 2,000 cigarette butts were found in a single day. At these meetings they’re also looking for specific ideas.
Health officials say the next step is to take all the information that they gather from these meetings and regroup April 9th to figure out the best way to address the concerns of the community.
