Port dispute costing U.S. billions of dollars a day

(NBC) West coast ports are embroiled in a contract dispute this holiday weekend, which some experts say is costing the U.S. economy billions of dollars a day.

The long weekend slowdown is a result of stalled contract talks between the Pacific Maritime Association, International Longshoreman and Warehouse Union.

The slowdown affects imports as well as exports, and consumers may soon see the effects on store shelves.

The industry handles an estimated one trillion dollars in goods each year.
