Ash Wednesday marks first day of lent

Wednesday was Ash Wednesday and the first day of lent for many Christians.

Christ the King Church at 25th and Wanamaker in Topeka held mass Wednesday night.

Lent begins six-and-a-half weeks before Easter, and ends at midnight on Easter Saturday.

Many people give up something pleasurable for lent.

Some people take up acts of charity.

Lent observances date back to the 4th century.
