Ichabod baseball stays perfect with win over Rockhurst

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Washburn Ichabods remained perfect on the season picking up a 9-7 win over Rockhurst on Wednesday at Falley Field in a game which saw 28 combined hits.

The Ichabods (9-0) jumped on the board first scoring a run in the bottom of the first when Parker Gibson scored on a wild pitch after leading off the game with a single. In the bottom of the second Washburn added another solo run when Corey Gragg tripled to center scoring Connor Crimmins who led off the inning with a single. In the third, Washburn’s Riley Krane doubled to left scoring Gibson putting Washburn up 3-0.

Rockhurst (0-1) got on the board with a run in the top of the fourth cutting the Ichabod lead to 3-1, but took the lead after a three-run homer by Brett Marr putting the Hawks up 4-3. The lead was short-lived as Washburn came back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth going back up 5-4.

In the sixth, Rockhurst left the bases loaded in the frame scoring only once to tie the score at 5-5.

Washburn took a 7-5 lead in the bottom of the seventh when Krane crushed a two-run homer to right center as the Ichabods regained the lead.

The Hawks added a solo run in the top of the eighth cutting the Ichabod advantage to 7-6.

Washburn scored two more in the bottom of the eighth going up 9-6 after a single by Gibson.

Rockhurst added another solo run in the top of the ninth, but would get no closer as the Ichabods picked up the win.

Krane finished 3 for 4 coming up a single short of hitting for the cycle while driving in four runs. Gibson had four hits scoring four times while driving in two. Crimmins and Corey Gragg each had two hits for Washburn.

Maustin Otterstatter pitched five innings striking out three starting the game and then Tyler Kilmer pitched three innings in relief scattering two hits allowing an earned run picking up the win and Greg Mason picked up his first save giving an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth.
