Police ID woman who fell through ice trying to retrieve dog

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Police in Kansas say a woman has died after falling through ice on a pond while trying to retrieve her dog.

Sgt. John Ryan with the Wichita Police Department said Sunday afternoon that divers recovered the woman’s body from the pond in park on the city’s northeast side.

She was identified Monday as 28-year-old Erika Owen.

Ryan says Owen was walking her dog when it spotted another dog and ran across the pond. She went out onto the ice as the dogs were scuffling.

The newspaper and KWCH-TV report at least one witness attempted to rescue her.

The dog did not survive.
