Detroit closes many schools for day due to teacher shortage

DETROIT (AP) — Classes have been canceled in 18 Detroit schools after teachers failed to appear on the same day as a major announcement about the district’s future.

Detroit Public Schools emergency manager Darnell Earley expressed regret about the closings Thursday and says the “unplanned turn of events” by teachers “is seriously misguided.”

Many parents of students at the schools expressed frustration when they got the news.

Gov. Rick Snyder is scheduled to announce his plan for the struggling district, which has big debts and poor student achievement in many of its approximately 100 schools. State-appointed emergency managers have been in place since 2009.

Steve Conn (CONE), head of the Detroit Federation of Teachers, says many teachers are headed to Lansing. He says Snyder’s plan could lead to strikes and “rebellion” in Detroit.
