Shawnee County Emergency Management Director resigns

TOPEKA (KSNT) –  Shawnee County’s Emergency Management Director announced he’s leaving the position effective Thursday.

Dave Sterbenz says he resigned voluntarily while meeting with the Shawnee County Commission Thursday morning.

Commissioners accepted his resignation along with the resignation of human resources director Jon Thummel.

Sterbenz has served in the position since 2007.

He says there has been a succession plan in place ever since he took the position of director.

Sterbenz says there are no hard feelings or disappointment over the resignation.

“I don’t think there’s been any butting of heads or any big issues it’s just the decision to go in a different direction,” Sterbenz said.

Deputy Director of Shawnee County Emergency Management Dusty Nichols will serve as interim director.

Sterbenz denied that his resignation was connected to a misunderstanding between himself and Thummel that resulted in an employee being underpaid by more than $6,000 a year for two years.
