TOPEKA (KSNT) – Hayden earned a pair of run-rule victories, while Junction City needed some late-game heroics for a return trip to the state tournament. The Wildcats blanked Abilene and Atchison on 10-0 run rules to advance to the Class 4A Division I state tournament. Hayden senior pitchers Jacob Head and Brogan Heinen allowed a combined one hit on the day.
“I’m very happy for them,” Hayden head coach Bill Arnold said. “We want to go down there and make some noise this year instead of the short go that we had last year.”
As for the Junior Blues, they received a two-RBI double from senior Blake Peterson in the bottom of the 9th to beat Lawrence 6-5 in the Class 6A regional semifinal. Peterson struck out 10 batters over six innings on the mound.
Washburn Rural then led Junction City 3-2 after six innings in the regional championship. All of the runs were scored in the first inning. Then Junction City rallied with a two-out, 2-RBI double in the top of the 7th by Charlie Peyla to make its second straight appearance to the Class 6A state tournament.
In softball, Seaman remained undefeated with a 10-0 victory over Topeka West. The Lady Vikings (21-0) enter the Class 5A state tournament unblemished for the second year in a row.
Shawnee Heights also won its regional championship in Class 5A. The Lady T-Birds beat Lansing 11-2 at Lake Shawnee.
