TOPEKA (KSNT) – Shawnee County officials said late Thursday that an unknown amount of raw, untreated sewage went into Lake Sherwood, and they’re calling for people to take extra precautions around the lake.
The problem was reported to the county by the Sherwood Regional Sanitary Sewer System, which said some sewage came out of a manhole earlier in the day and went into the lake.
It’s not know just how much got into the lake, but county health officials say they don’t believe there is an “imminent” public health threat.
Still they’re urging anyone using the lake in the area of the 3600 block of SW Blue Inn Road to take safety precautions like avoiding swimming or swallowing the water, keeping pets out o the water and wahing your hands before eating.
The incident is still under investigation and test results of the lake water for bacteria should be ready Friday.
