TOPEKA (KSNT) – An overnight fire in Topeka set two homes ablaze and left one family’s home destroyed.
The Topeka Fire Department was called to the 1200 block of Filmore around 2:40 Tuesday morning. More than 20 firefighters worked for over an hour to put it out. During that time, the fire spread to the home next door.
The family said their dog alerted them to the fire and everyone was able to get out safely.
Homeowner Eric Patterson said the family dog alerted them to the fire.
Patterson said, “We heard our dog sniffing […] then our daughter came running down the hallway saying, ‘Hey! The house next door is on fire!'”
That’s when he gathered the family and headed out the door with a phone to call 9-11.
“We were just very thankful. It could be a different story tonight, but God blessed us to get out alive.”
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
