TOPEKA (KSNT) — A car that exploded sent two people to the hospital on Sunday morning, shutting down Topeka’s Oakland Expressway (K4 Highway) in both directions.
At around 10:05 a.m., a car headed southbound on Oakland Expressway exploded while over the Kansas River, according to witnesses. The car then swerved and went about another 200 yards before stopping, they say.
A male adult was driving and a child was in the front seat. Both were taken to a local hospital with injures. The severity of their injuries is unknown at this time. Currently, we do not have names, ages, or which hospital they were taken to.
Karen Pagel, a Topeka resident, was driving northbound when the car exploded right before her eyes.
“It just blew up,” she said. “I thought the car was going to catch on fire, but it didn’t. And so, immediately, my son and my daughter got out to help.”
A Kansas Highway Patrol officer said that there were “artillery shells” in the car. Those items will be removed from the car.
KHP, Shawnee County Sheriff’s Department deputies, the Topeka Police Department, and Soldier Creek fire were on the scene.
