HAYS (KSNT) – For just the second time in the 42-year history of the Kansas Shrine Bowl, the East Squad shutout the West Squad 21-0 in Hays on Saturday night.
The scoring started early for the East, former Shawnee Heights Thunderbird Tony Barksdale Jr had a 10-yard rushing touchdown midway through the first quarter to make it 7-0 East.
Then in the second quarter, Barksdale Jr. caught a screen pass from Topeka High quarterback Alec Beatty and went 52-yards for another touchdown. The East led 14-0 at halftime.
Beatty completed seven of his nine passes for 84 yards and one touchdown.
The East added another score in the 3rd quarter, and cruised to a 21-0 victory.
Following the win, Barksdale Jr., who also threw a 68-yard halfback pass, was named the East’s Most Valuable Player.
