WICHITA (KSNW) – Wichita police are investigating a case of animal cruelty that is tied to a shooting in the 300 block of North Elizabeth early Friday.
Police say the suspect in the video of the cat being thrown against the wall is believed to be the same suspect in the shooting. He has been identified as Damion K. Looney according to police arrest records.
The 16-week-old kitten was taken to an animal hospital by police but did not survive.
Police say the video has been seen across the country, and they have received several phone calls after it was posted on Snapchat.
“The video was sent out initially through Snapchat, and once it was sent out there, some people captured the video. The video was then sent out via Facebook and has gone viral,” said Lt. Jeff Gilmore, Wichita Police Department.
Looney was arrested Friday morning after he allegedly struck a 21-year-old man in the head with a gun and fired a gun striking a 24-year-old man in the head. It all stemmed from a fight Looney had with his girlfriend at the bar.
“The cat does belong to the young lady. There was some vindictiveness there. Because of an earlier incident between the two, he was doing this and putting it out there to harm her, we believe,” added Gilmore.
Looney is facing one count of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault, one count of aggravated kidnapping, and one count of robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon.
The facts on both cases will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney on Tuesday.
