TOPEKA (KSNT) – Improving Birth is hosting its 4th annual Rally to Improve Birth in Topeka on September 12, 2015.
Organizer Carey Thrasher said it is a peaceful event, not a protest, that is part of a national effort to raise awareness about “the critical problems in our maternity care system.”
The rally runs from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on September 12 at the Birth and Women’s Center, 1412 SW 6th Ave., Topeka.
Thrasher said, “There is a serious lack of respectful, evidence-based care, but many people do not realize this, even moms.”
According to the Improving Birth website, the goal is to encourage women to make safe, informed decisions about care for themselves and their babies.
“Our hospitals and care providers are choosing methods of care based more on convenience, litigation, and tradition than scientific research and mothers’ preferences,” said Thrasher. “With this rally, we want to get the word out that things need to change, and the mothers, fathers, and children of Topeka are willing and able to make change happen.”
