KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A 19-year-old man has been charged in the shooting of a juvenile in Kansas City.
Jackson County prosecutors said Wednesday that Leroy Walters was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action for the Monday shooting. According to police, the victim was walking with a group of friends when another juvenile arrived in a taxi cab driven by Walters.
Police say the juvenile in the vehicle demanded items from the victim and hit him in the face with a handgun, causing it to fire. According to authorities, the shooter then stepped back and shot the victim in the chest before fleeing in the taxi cab.
Officers say a juvenile suspect is in custody. The victim survived the shooting.
It was not immediately clear if Walters has an attorney.
