EMPORIA (KSNT) – Emporia looks to bounce back this season after 3-6 showing in 2014.
“It was a tough year last year going 3-6,” said Corby Milleson, Head Coach of the Spartans. “Nobody ever likes to do that. We were competitive I felt like in all of our games except for a couple.”
You can’t expect too much from a first year head coach, and some miscommunication lead to a few key losses in the regular season.
“I think execution kind off hurt us, we had a new coach so it took us a while to get used to the new plays and get used to the new system,” said Nick Kirmer, senior fullback and linebacker. “This year should be a little bit better, because we all know what’s expected of us and how practices are going to go and we all know each other a lot better.”
Coach Milleson is now in his 2nd season as Emporia’s head coach, and he hopes to take his team to a high finish in a very competitive Centennial League, with the help of his upperclassmen.
“We’re looking for better leadership out of our seniors and better growth from our underclassmen. We’re young, but we’re not going to make excuses for our youth.”
The Spartans return nine starters from last season and the players hope that the experience, along with their defense can lead the way.
“I know for a fact that we’ll be better this year,” said Max Brown, senior center and defensive end. “We got some returning players that are going to be really good. We work well together, we’ve been together since 7th grade year and I think that we’ll be way better than last year.”
Now when asked who the players were looking forward to playing, there was a unanimous answer.
“We want ‘T High,’ definitely,” Brown said. “Last year….. We’ll forget about last year. This year… it’s time.”
The Spartans lost to Topeka High 63-21 last year, and some players believed that they ran the score up on the team unnecessarily.
“Last year was a little rough,” Kirmer said. “We know they’ll be good again this year, but hopefully it can be a lot better game.”
Emporia will have to wait until September 25 to face the Trojans of Topeka High.
They open up their season against Washburn Rural.
