High school football player suffers head injury during game

WESTMORELAND, Tenn. (WKRN) – A Middle Tennessee football player remains hospitalized in critical condition after suffering a head injury in a game Monday night.

Sumner County School officials and family members said 15-year Tyler Graves of Westmoreland was taken by medical helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center around 7:30 p.m. during a junior varsity game between Westmoreland and Lebanon.

Witnesses said Graves had just made a tackle in the fourth quarter with another Westmoreland player when he stood up and said, “My legs don’t feel so good,” before he collapsed.

Both school officials and Graves’ mother said the middle schooler underwent surgery to relieve pressure on his brain but “has not awakened yet.”

Family members told News 2 doctors immediately operated after finding blood on the teen’s brain.

The teen’s mother added she is “hopeful for a recovery” when her son wakes up.
