Emporia State thrashes Northeastern State, stays unbeaten

EMPORIA, Kan. – Emporia State scored on nine of 11 possessions on the way to a 55-14 win over Northeastern State on Saturday at Jones Field at Welch Stadium. With the win Emporia State improved to 4-0 for the third time in the last four years.

BIG NUMBERS
Brent Wilson continues to put up big numbers for the Hornets. He was 12 of 18 for 285 yards and five touchdowns in the first half. He connected with seven different receivers in the first half with each of them having a catch of at least 15 yards. Morris Williams II was the big weapon with four catches for 147 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively the Hornets had 11.0 tackles for loss led by Donovan Walker’s three TFL for 15 yards.

WHAT A HALF
The Hornets jumped out to a 42-7 lead in the first half. At the break each team had run 41 plays on offense with Emporia State gaining 387 yards to 205 for Northeastern State. The 42 points were the most in a half by the Hornets since scoring 49 points against Southwest Baptist in 2013.

DEPTH
Over the last two weeks Emporia State had lost two starting receivers in Reese Richards and Justin Brown. Nine Hornets caught a pass of at least 15 yards. In addition to Wilson’s 12 of 18 performance for 285 yards and five touchdowns, Ty Reasnor played the second half and went five of seven for 50 yards and scored a rushing touchdown.

RUNNING THE BALL
Landon Nault led all rushers with 88 yards on 18 carries with a touchdown. Antonio Brown had 11 carries for 50 yards while Denzel Strong had 42 yards on 11 rushes.

THE DEFENSE
Emporia State had 26 players make at least one tackle. Gabe Cleveland and Kole Schankie each had seven stops to lead the Hornets. Donovan Walker had five tackles and 3.0 TFL along with a solo sack.

UP NEXT
Emporia State will travel to St. Charles, Mo. to take on Lindenwood in the MIAA TV Game of the Week on Saturday, October 3. Kick-off from Hunter Stadium is set for 2:37 p.m.
