Florida professor accused of trying to murder her disabled husband

LAKELAND, Fla. (WFLA) – A Florida college professor is accused of trying to murder her disabled husband by suffocating him with a pillow.

Cherry Olds, 59, of Lakeland, is a professor at Polk State College. Detectives say Olds’ adult son called the sheriff’s office to report his father was the victim of attempted murder.

The son said that his father is a paraplegic who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis (MS). He is bedridden and cannot take care of himself or defend himself from a physical attack.

When deputies arrived on-scene, the victim, 57-year-old James Olds, told deputies that his wife, Cherry, held a pillow over his face and attempted to suffocate him twice on Wednesday, Sept. 30.

Deputies say after the first attempt, James yelled at Cherry, “You almost killed me!” to which she replied, “That’s the point [expletive]” and tried to put the pillow over his face again.

During the second attempt, investigators say James turned his head to the side so that he could breathe. The Olds’ son heard something going on and ran into the room. The couple’s son believes he interrupted his mother from further injuring his father.

Cherry Olds was not at the residence when deputies arrived. Deputies obtained a warrant for her arrest.

On Sunday, Oct. 4th, Olds turned herself in at the Polk County Jail. She was arrested on charges of attempted second degree murder and abuse of a disabled adult.

She is being held in jail without bond.
