Washburn volleyball stays hot, sweeps Emporia State

TOPEKA, Kan. – No. 12 Washburn Volleyball swept rival Emporia State, 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-17), in the second round of the Turnpike Tussle on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at Lee Arena.

WU (17-1, 5-1 MIAA) swept the regular season series with ESU (8-7, 3-3 MIAA) and has now won 13 straight against the Hornets.

Tied at 11 in the first set, WU fell behind, 15-13, before a timeout to reset. From there, ESU kept the lead at two until 16-14, when two Sarah Vicory kills sandwiched a McKenzie Hartzog ace as part of a 9-1 Washburn run with ended with six straight (23-17). After an ESU point stopped the run, Washburn closed the set, 25-18.

Washburn was on the verge of pulling away in the second set, up 15-11, but saw ESU climb back to take a 19-17 lead shortly after. WU recovered to tie it at 19-19, but again saw ESU regain a two-point lead, 21-19. The Ichabods fought back for a second time, going on a 4-0 run (down 22-21) to face set point, up 24-22 on a kill from Taylor Selk. A service error kept the Hornets within one, but another Selk kill ended the set, 25-23, and sent WU into intermission up two games.

Out of the pause, Washburn and Emporia State were tied at 9-9 in the third when two straight Selk kills gave the Ichabods the lead for good, up 11-9. Leading 14-12, Washburn went on an 8-2 run that put the lead at eight (22-14) before clinching the match with a 25-17 set three win.

Selk hit .545 with 13 kills on 22 swings, adding five digs and two block assists as well. Leanna Willer was second on the team with 10 kills, adding eight digs and one block assist. Vicory swung .261 and had nine kills, while Carley Swan was fourth on the team with six kills (.357 hitting percentage) and two blocks.

Defensively, Alyssa Carney and Hartzog split the team lead in digs with 13 apiece, and Liz Powell had a double-double of 38 assists and 11 digs.

Washburn heads west this weekend for two matches, traveling to Nebraska-Kearney on Friday, Oct. 9 and Fort Hays State on Saturday, Oct. 10.
