TOPEKA (KSNT) – Looks like Topeka has hit the jackpot as the Las Vegas Train Robbers baseball team plans to make their home in the Capital City of Kansas. They’re hoping to steal the diamond at Lake Shawnee’s Bettis Family Sports Complex for the 2016 Pecos League season. Tuesday the independent, professional baseball team made the pitch to the Shawnee County Commission in the hopes of a future home at Lake Shawnee. They updated their Facebook profile pic as the Topeka Train Robbers way back in August. Their first game is set for May 18, 2016.
Shawnee County Commissioners will hear from Parks and Recreation Director John Knight about making room for the team at a meeting Friday morning. They will consider authorization and execution of a contract with the Pecos League, LLC, for the use of the Bettis Family Sports Complex, for 35-38 games from May to August, 2016. The fee would be $365 per game and $1 per person from gate admissions.
The team’s 2016 season schedule is already available on the Robber’s website and tickets can be purchased online for $6 apiece. The team is so confident in the move that mock-up uniforms and ball caps have already been designed. You can view them online.
The Robbers have currently signed 5 players; 3 pitchers and 2 infielders so far. Tryouts for the Pecos League will be held in five U.S. cities including Atlanta, Houston, LA, Boston, and right here in Topeka. Interested in trying out for the team? Click here for the guidelines and qualifications.
