SHAWANO COUNTY, Wis. (WBAY) — Shawano County Sheriff Adam Bieber says Deputies took a coach of a traveling basketball camp into custody Friday night on child sex crime charges.
The coach from Portland, Oregon began texting a 13-year-old Shawano boy after the boy attended his basketball camp on Tuesday. The texts were first about the boy’s athletic talents, but then became suggestive.
The boy’s mother contacted the Sheriff’s Office when she saw the texts. Deputies took over communications with the support of the family. That conversation became sexually explicit, and the coach arranged to meet the boy Friday evening.
Deputies took the coach into custody at that meeting point. He’s currently being held in the Shawano County Jail, pending child enticement charges. Action 2 News is not naming him until he is officially charged.
In just the past two and a half weeks, the Shawano County Sheriff’s Office has arrested five men, all accused of using a computer to facilitate a child sex crime.
“This fifth arrest is unique in that the initial contact was made between an adult and an actual 13-year-old child,” Sheriff Bieber says. “In this case, a vigilant mother identified that a provocative conversation was being held with her son and took the actions necessary to prevent both immediate, and perhaps future, victimization.”
