Crews battle fire at former home of young Topeka burn victim

TOPEKA (KSNT) — The Topeka Fire Department responded to a house fire in the 3200 block of SE Girard Street shortly before 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20.

The preliminary investigation determined the fire was set intentionally.

KSNT News also confirmed the house was once home to young Topeka burn victim Jayden Beddo and her family.

According to Jayden’s mom Brandy Scales, their family moved out of the house about two weeks before the fire Tuesday.

Scales said the home was vacant, although her uncle had been doing some remodeling work for the landlord. The family was renting the home.

No one was there when the fire broke out Tuesday. Neighbors saw flames coming from the house and called 911.

Officials said the fire caused about $20,500 in damage.

Seven-year-old Jayden Beddo was severely burned in January, reportedly by a stranger. That investigation is still open until police can find a solid lead.

KSNT News cannot confirm whether there is a connection between Jayden’s incident and the fire on Tuesday night. However, KSNT News will dig more into this story. Watch KSNT News Wednesday night for updates.

Anyone with information about the circumstances of this fire is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 785-234-0007.
