Kansas City, Mo. – Washburn swept the MIAA Volleyball Athletes of the Week as Leanna Willer was named the Hitter of the Week and Alyssa Carney was named the Specialist of the Week.
MIAA Hitter of the Week
Leanna Willer, OH, Washburn
Leanna Willer had 21 kills (3.50 per set) and 27 digs (4.50 per set) over the weekend as Washburn swept Pittsburg State and No. 10 Central Oklahoma. Willer had a double-double against UCO, leading the team with 11 kills and finishing second on the team (one behind libero Alyssa Carney) with 22 digs. Against PSU, Willer swung an impressive .625 (10 kills on 16 swings) and did not commit an error, adding five digs and two service aces as well. The two-game performance allowed her to overtake the MIAA lead for kills per set and moved her to No. 17 on Washburns career kills list (up from No. 19). The 5-10 junior outside hitter is a native of Elkhorn, Neb. where she competed at Elkhorn High School.

MIAA Specialist of the Week
Alyssa Carney, L, Washburn
Carney averaged 6.17 digs per set in two sweeps last weekend over Pittsburg State and No. 10 Central Oklahoma. WU’s libero had 14 digs and two service aces against PSU, followed by a 23-dig performance against UCO (including 13 digs in the final set to secure the sweep). Carney has reached double-digit digs in all 24 matches this season and has broken the 20-dig barrier eight times on the year. She finished the weekend with 37 total digs and three service aces. She is now just 66 digs away from No. 1,000 in her two years at WU. The 5-8 libero is a native of Auburn, Kan. where she competed at Washburn Rural prior to playing at Wichita State.
