Pilot killed in Sunday crash in Ottawa County

SALINA (KSNT) – Authorities said a man was killed after his small, homemade aircraft crashed in southern Ottawa County.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash happened a little before 6:00 p.m. Sunday, north of the Saline-Ottawa county line.

Officials said the plane had only traveled about 100 to 200 yards before it lost power and crashed.

The home built, experimental plane was destroyed in the crash.

The pilot, 62-year-old Delwyn Schmidt on Bennington, was the only person on board.

He was taken to the Salina Regional Medical Center before being transported to a hospital in Wichita, where he died.
