TOPEKA (KSNT) – The San Bernardino Police Chief Jarron Burguan told the media Thursday during a briefing, the suspects in the mass shooting at the inland regional center left behind a remote controlled explosive device that failed to detonate yesterday. The chief also said an arsenal was recovered at the couple’s home. Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik fired 65-75 rounds Wednesday when they entered the holiday party where Farook’s colleagues were celebrating, killing 14 and injuring many.
A shooting like this can happen anywhere, says personal safety expert, Officer Travis Jepson with the Topeka Police Department “we need to expect that this could potentially happen here.”
There have been a total of 355 mass shootings in the US so far in 2015. Mass shootings are classified as four or more victims being shot.
Jepson says there are 3 things you should do in a situation like this; run, hide, fight. “Definitely running is the best option, if you can. If you can flee, flee and flee now”
If you can’t run, the next this you should do is hide. Find yourself closet, a classroom or an office. Be sure to shut the door, lock it, and block it with whatever items are available.
“Last option would be fight. Finding anything that you can to fight with, whether it’s something like an office chair, maybe something like the computer screen, those are pretty light weight. The shelves can be removed, anything that has any type of weight or can be used in self-defense,” says Jepson. He says knowing what to do and being prepared doesn’t mean this will happen but, “if we have that mind set and hopefully it doesn’t happen at least we were prepared.”
