Topeka Police arrest suspect in double homicide

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Topeka Police arrested one person in connection with the killing of two people Thursday night.

The victims, Daquhan S. Jackson, 20, and Mary E. Thomas, 29, were found shot to death in an apartment in the 200 block of S.E. Lawrence shortly before 10 p.m.

Police arrived to the apartment complex after reports of gunfire. In a press release, police say the couple was involved in a disturbance but did not give details.

The suspect, Nicholas S. Phillips, 22, of Topeka, was found by police in the same block as the homicide.

According to police, Phillips was charged with two counts of felony murder.

When KSNT News arrived Thursday night, family and friends gathered around the crime scene crying and asking to see their loved ones.

KSNT News spoke with the male victim’s father, who tells us he’s angry at the community and frustrated with police.

“This type of crap will go on tomorrow and next week it’ll be someone else’s kid laying out here in the street and our community is going to do the same thing. Wake up tomorrow and talk about it.”

Topeka Police say the investigation is in its preliminary stage. KSNT News will update you as further details come in. Police are expected to release more information later Friday.
