Teen arrested in overnight Lawrence stabbing death, victim identified

LAWRENCE (KSNT) – The Lawrence Police Department says they have made an arrest early Tuesday morning for a homicide that occurred at a home off North Michigan Street arounde midnight.

Officers were sent to an apartment in the 1200 block of George Court in Lawrence around 11:50 Monday night in regards to a stabbing. Police were called by a juvenile who said he found his grandmother deceased inside her home. Police report the juvenile then left the apartment and called police from a friend’s home in the neighborhood. Officers arrived at the scene and found the victim deceased, nothing the victim had traumatic injuries.

The victim was identified as 67-year-old Deborah Bretthauer, of Lawrence.

Officers transported the sixteen year old juvenile male to the Investigations and Training Center where he was interviewed.  Police say at the conclusion of the interview, the teen was arrested for first degree murder and transported to the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center.

The identity of the suspect is not being released at this time.
