POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY (KSNT) — The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office is continuing their investigation of a Dec. 29 shooting on Mt. Zion Road in rural St. George.
They believe two vehicles were involved in the shooting: A blue 2001 Buick LeSabre driven by the suspect and a red 1992 Chevrolet pickup driven by the victim. The vehicles may have been together around 4:30 p.m. the same day in an area south of Highway 24 and Flush Road.
That suspect, 18-year-old Dakota Fair, is believed to have fired a gun from the LeSabre at the victim’s pickup. Then, it is believed they both left the location together and ended up west of Lake Elbo Road on Mt. Zion Road.
The victim, 23-year-old Tyrel C. Britton from Westmoreland, was found bleeding from a gunshot wound and was life-flighted to a Topeka hospital. Before being flown, he was able to provide deputies with Fair’s name as the man who shot him. The victim and suspect are believed to have known each other.
After the victim’s tip, the Sheriff’s Office searched in the area west of Louisville and received reports from the public on the whereabouts of Fair. At about 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 29, Fair was taken into custody at his home off of Cannonball Road in Louisville, Kan. Fair is being held at the Pottawatomie County Jail for attempted murder.
A female passenger who was in the Fair’s vehicle was also interviewed has taken into custody. Melissa Umscheid, a 21-year-old from rural Wamego, is currently being held at the Pottawatomie County Jail for criminal solicitation. Bond has not been set at this time.
No further suspects are being sought at this time.
