TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Kmart store at 2240 N. Tyler Street in Topeka will close to the public in mid-April.
Until then, the store says they will remain open for customers. The store will begin its liquidation sale on January 24, 2015. Media relations with Sears Holding says store closures are part of a series of actions they are taking to reduce on-going expenses, adjust their asset base, and accelerate the transformation of their business model.
The store has 49 employees. Those associates that are eligible will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Sears or Kmart stores. Most of the associates are part time/hourly.
Customers with layaway contracts at the store have a couple of options: 1) Pay off the contract early, or 2) Transfer their layaway contract to a neighboring store or online. The store says this does entail cancelling the contract and re-creating it. The store says they are communicating with their layaway customers as they come in weekly to make their payments.
