We’ve Got Your Back: Protect yourself from possible scammers

(TOPEKA) KSNT News – KSNT News has received multiple phone calls about possible rip-offs arriving in their mailboxes.

“We receive thousands of complaints every year,” says Attorney General Derek Schmidt. “It was about 4,000 last year that we actually opened open cases on about some sort of consumer protection violation.”

Certain groups are subject for enhanced compensation under legislation.

Seniors, persons with disabilities, military personnel, and families are the protected categories that are subject to compensation under legislation.

But here are simple ways you can protect yourself:

  • Be careful of scammers who ask for the routing numbers off your check.
  • Beware of callers requesting money to be sent via wire service or overnight courier
  • Forward email solicitations for foreign lottery promotions to the federal trade commission
  • Shred it.
