TOPEKA (KSNT) — The Kmart on at 2240 North Tyler Street began its liquidation sale Sunday as part of a national downsizing plan by the retail chain that plans on closing several of its stores by mid-April.
“Back when my kids were little, this was the only store that was in north Topeka,” says Mary Killgore. “This is where I’d get all my kids clothes shopping for school.”
The store has 49 employees who will have severance and be able to apply for positions at Sears or other Kmart stores. Layaway customers can either pay off their contracts early or transfer them to another store.
Topeka is still a thriving retail city, according to the US Census Bureau. In the meantime, shoppers have just a few months left to buy from the store.
