TOPEKA (KSNT) — The Topeka Police Department says one person has died after an early morning crash following a police chase.

At 5:00 Thursday morning, officers attempted to stop a vehicle at NW St. John Street and N. Kansas Avenue. The driver of the vehicle initiated a low speed pursuit through north Topeka, crossing southbound over the Kansas Avenue Bridge where tire deflation devices were successfully deployed.

The driver of the vehicle was involved in an injury accident at SW 6th Avenue and SW Topeka Boulevard. According to local police, a passenger in the vehicle struck by the suspect later died at a local hospital from injuries sustained during the crash. The name of the victim has not been released to the public at this time.

The other passenger in the vehicle struck by the suspect received non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect struck a second vehicle at that same intersection and that driver sustained minor injuries.

TPD says more information will be released as the investigation continues.

The intersection at SW 6th Avenue and SW Topeka Boulevard was closed for about seven hours for crime scene processing. It is now back open.
